musicAbility is a new program at camp that is designed to supply and enhance self-confidence, socialization and effective communication skills. musicAbility reaches out to our campers in a safe, accepting environment where professional musicians and CAMPERS join in the jam.
Each week we have percussionist, Ryan Gray and guitarist, Alex Neade come from Halifax to both camp locations. They have formed the camps’ own two man band that gets the groove flowing among the campers with interactive music activities. Thanks to our hired musical talents the camp now has a number of fun percussion instruments that the campers can shake, bang and hit as they please. Along with camp staff, the guys lead the camp in a professional jam session where everyone has a chance to shine during their own solo break. During our jam session Ryan and Alex give the camp a little pre-dinner show where campers can shout out song requests, play along on the instruments, dance and even sing with the band. The music continues after dinner with Play for Purpose, where Ryan and Alex host a camp wide dance party! Then Ryan and Alex lead the campers in a camp wide sing along around the campfire. With Ryan on his drum and Alex on the acoustic guitar. The two sing well known oldies, from any song by the Beatles, to Brown Eyed Girl, to Jambalaya.
Each week we will be doing something different too. Like concert style jam sessions and performances with surprise celebrity guests. There has even been one on one time for campers to work with a musician and create their own original piece. Ryan and Alex have just as much fun as the campers and are up for anything. We are very fortunate to have the musical duo with us this summer for musicAbility. It’s a great learning experience for the campers to be exposed to music, and the fun that is had by everyone makes the program even better.
